Useful information on the topic of rapid streptococcus tests in Vienna

What are streptococci?

Streptococci are a group of bacteria belonging to the Streptococcus genus. These bacteria are arranged in the form of balls (cocci) and can cause various diseases in humans and other animals. There are several types of streptococci, some of which are harmless and occur naturally in the body, while others can cause serious infections.
Strep infections are usually treated with antibiotics. It is important to treat infections appropriately to avoid serious complications, especially when they are infections such as streptococcal angina or bacterial meningitis.

When is a rapid streptococcal test useful?

A rapid strep test, also known as a strep rapid test or strep antigen test, is used to detect active Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococci) infection in a patient’s throat. This test is especially useful if you suspect streptococcal angina, a common infection in the throat area.
A rapid strep test is usually needed when a person has symptoms of a sore throat or throat infection.
It is important to note that the rapid test allows for a quick and preliminary diagnosis. If the result is negative but strep infection is strongly suspected, a culture may be done to make sure there is no infection. The decision to use a rapid test should be made by a medical professional.

How is a rapid strep test performed?

A rapid strep test, also known as a strep antigen test, is a simple and relatively quick method of diagnosing a strep throat infection. A sample is taken from the throat area with a sterile cotton swab. The cotton swab is gently rubbed over the tonsils and the back of the throat to collect a sufficient amount of secretions. This sample may contain the bacteria that cause streptococcal infection. The collected cotton swab is placed in a test solution or on a test strip coated with specific antibodies. These antibodies bind to specific streptococcal antigens if present in the sample. Depending on the test type and manufacturer, it usually only takes a few minutes before the result can be read.

How reliable is a rapid strep test?

It is important to note that while the rapid strep test provides a quick preliminary diagnosis, it is not as accurate as culture (growing the bacteria in a laboratory). If the result is positive, treatment with antibiotics is usually justified. If the result is negative but strep infection is strongly suspected, a culture may be done to make sure there is no infection.
